The saga begins. Stylistically it is good. I like the colors you chose and the character design is funny. It's not too long or short. The music choice is good. Really not too much else to say. PM me sometime and we'll take a piss together. Don't cross the streams.

Brewster responds:

I'd love to take a good piss with a good man

Stylistically excellent, but somewhat wasted by repeated animations, slow transitions, and lack of backgrounds. It's like you made several cool images but ultimately forced them to cover the entirety of the song you chose. Shorten it a bit, or fill out the song with twice as much animation and you'll have something special.

Lol. What a feel good flash animation.

BoobMarley responds:

Lol.

Nice music choice. The unfinishedness really makes gives the cartoon an offbeat pace. It also has a real feel-good element too it. Many of these would never have seen the light of day on their own, but together they are an homage to the animators.

References are better than jokes. Particularly from the 80's.

Not like your other stuff. It's good to be experimental and I think, stylistically, it is a success.

But.

It feels like the sort of cartoon that is setting the tone for dozens of more of the same, all detailing your sometimes devastating online critiques/sometimes cyber-bullying. Don't become the next ill will press. It doesn't suit you. Still, it was funny for what it was. You went 3 stars, and you deserve all 3/3 stars.

BoobMarley responds:

lol, stfu rob

The perfect 3.

Keep working on it

People in art/animation classes very often forget to write a story or a character for the audience to care about and instead pay attention only to the medium and the mechanics of animating. This generally leads to a visually stylistic but ultimately boring animation.

You, however, have the right idea. A robot walking around in a silly fashion on the moon is not trick, but the mysterious heart in his chassis protected only by cracked glass is a powerful image. This is especially true because the crack in the glass is overlaid the heart. The somber expression on the robot's face as it looks off to a distant and separated planet Earth portrays loneliness. That's an emotion we can all recognize and sympathize with.

The animation itself already looks great, though it is limited to the robot's walk. But with the care you put into the character design and story, I'm sure you'll be motivated enough to learn all the animation tricks and techniques you'll need to do the idea justice. Keep working on it and good work so far. 8/10, 5/5

I'm sorry I never wrote this review until now...

...because when I talk about the best things on Newgrounds, I always mention Shoo Fly. The inspiration that went into this was grand, because you followed through with beautifully animated action and a cute character design.

I can understand why making this might have been a harrowing experience. But you did everything right by your original idea and that is commendable.

I also disagree with you about there being not much of a story. Its true that there is no exposition, but none is needed. The emotions of the woman are so perfectly communicated by her expressions and actions that the story tells itself. That is by far the greatest strength of this cartoon.

Good, a little art-schoolish

Its always refreshing to see someone mix non-digital mediums with flash, and the very well designed, pencil-drawn robot looked great against the gray cardboard background. The head-spinning and the missile pack fun elements too.

Still, you can tell just by watching it that it was made for an art class. By that I mean to say that you cared more for the artistic medium than the character or the story: "Okay, we have a robot trying to escape a cardboard box. Oh look he's doing some funny things to try to get out. But why do I care? What's his story?".

Yeah, its unfair of me to expect that sort of thing, but you get where I am coming from right? Still, its worth an 8/10 to see pencil-drawn characters every once in a while.

Ben-the-Jew responds:

That's actually a completely fair observation to make. It really isn't all that entertaining outside of the context of appreciating the visuals now that I think about what you said. I was rushed (I always let deadlines creep up on me) to finish this project and totally let that blind me to some essential story-telling facets. I plum forgot to give the audience a reason to care about the robot and make the universe make sense.

I think maybe I could've reached you with some (or any, really) more set-up. Something like the paper-bot, slightly broken or maybe low on power, rummaging around a junk yard for parts and/or fuel. By chance he unearths the mysterious room. It appearing to consist of much more advanced tech than the junk, he enters hoping it'll provide him with what he seeks. Something like that maybe, haha.

Anyway, thank you for the thoughtful and helpful review. I took a lot away from it!

Grade A direction

Your direction is exceptional. The little things like the eyes that glow in the darkness between beams of light, the missing posters in the foreground, the extreme close-up of the bell and the movement of the characters reflected, the creepy music choice (Pirate's of the Caribbean am I right?), all create a dark and scary atmosphere that is hard to pull off in flash. The subsequent action was also fantastic, the motion of the villainess, particularly her tail, and the sweeping ship deck shot were difficult animations I am sure.

It is true that the character drawings were not inspired and tweening legs to make a character walk is not impressive, but under any time constraint, you spent your time very well by focusing on the direction and all the elements I listed above which contributed to the creepy atmosphere. So 10/10, 5/5
